Cassandra Hollis Sunglasses Shop Fashion Editor gives her top five easy statement sunglasses:
Top down dressing is becoming increasingly popular. Statement frames frequently dictate outfits on the street, red carpet and catwalk. Worn over the eyes sunglasses are perhaps one of our most direct sartorial statements. Why waste it on something average?
You may have a general idea of what works for you and what doesn’t. But when it comes to wilder shapes the rules can change as unexpected shapes throw different angles (Sunglasses Shop do offer free returns though, so you can just keep trying). Although my advice is if you love something enough just wear it, sometimes it just don’t fit.
Unless you are blessed with a heart shaped face which suits most styles when it comes to a stand out frame you will just have to try it on. But luckily there are some sure fire high impact hits that will likely fit you like a glove. Here are my top five easy statement sunglasses that give you max effect with little if any facial logistics to be concerned with.
1. Miu Miu 10NS Noir
You will likely have seen this one before. It was first worn on the Miu Miu ready to wear autumn/winter 2011 catwalk to accompany Miuccia Prada’s modern take on forties glamour. But it has become a modern classic not just because of its perfectly quirky retro flavour but because it is just so flattering. Everyone looks good in this frame. The modern femme fatale made an appearance at the Dior and Prada autumn/winter 2013 runways amongst others but really who needs an excuse to flaunt this glitter drenched beauty?
Masculine elements have been giving women’s modern clothes striking boxy cuts at Celine, Chloe and Stella McCartney for several seasons now. Stella and Celine have brought it into their sunglasses collections too. It can be a tricky look but the new Celine Skater for me is one of the best. It’s a short style so suits most face shapes. It’s basically a wayfarer shape with a super thick mono brow. The depth continues on in deep temples. Triple hinge pins seal the deal. You can really feel the quality with Celine too.
3. Sheriff and Cherry G11-S
Wonderfully original the G11-S from cult brand Sheriff and Cherry provides a sassy hybrid of the wayfarer and cat eye. Its spot on shape is also super easy to wear being a shortish style. For me the ultimate twist is the dipped contrast temples. Mismatched metal charms are at the temples. These sunglasses are hand made and the price is excellent.
4. Italia Independent 090
The statement needn’t come from shape particularly. Italia Independent (which provides Karl Lagerfeld’s trademark black sunglasses these days) dress its frames with its unique I Velvet material. It’s washable and doesn’t fade in the sun. Punk is a big A/W trend and can come off very contrived. This frame or those from Alexander McQueen are the only studs I’ll be wearing. The classic wayfarer shape is a cinch to wear.
5. Stella McCartney 4033
Thanks to the likes of Burberry and DKNY we are spoilt for choice when it comes to animal print on the high street. Stella McCartney’s 4033 is the perfect way to make your mark in the concrete jungle. Leopard printed sunglasses don’t always come off. Stella’s have a real premium feel with a dappled havana interior.
