Stop dreaming. 6 Tips to make it happen.

Dreaming is good, it takes us to different places where all seems to look pretty good, it takes us to the lifestyle that perhaps we want to achieve...
Now, this won't happen just by thinking about it, you have to take action too.
I don't want to sound like a twat or like I'm preaching in here but what I've learnt is all about baby steps, that you can add to your routine.

 1. Define your dream job or goal.

It's pretty hard to get to somewhere if you don't know where you want to go to begin with.
What is your dream job? You want to be a fashion journalist, illustrator, photographer, you want to set up your own business...If you aren't sure yet, it's ok. Some people find it straight away for others takes us a bit more time (I will write another post about it)
If you are doing already your dream job, what is your next goal? Define it and write it down.

2. Do what you dream of doing as often as you can.

Like everything, the more you do something the better you get. If you want to get notice and really stand out , you need to spend time learning new skills.Start with committing a few hours a day building experience or perhaps making your portfolio.

3. Do some research.

It’s worth taking the time to check the work of others. This is useful not only as an opportunity to check out the competition but also to see where your field is heading. See who’s new and what’s popular and what you can take from that to boost your own work.

4. Daily Networking and social media.

You don't have to be all day in facebook or twitter (in fact this is a big reason for not getting things done) but chatting or commenting to 3-5 people everyday makes a big difference without overwhelming your routine. Sometimes is just as simple as asking people how they did it. Most people are very helpful and like to share their own experinces. Talk to people that are doing what you woud like to be doing, show them your work and get some feedback plus it is always nice to meet like minded people anyway!

5. Daily Self- Promotion.

This is the most important it is almost as important as doing things and this is the one I personally struggle the most.I'm self- employed so if would not send emails or phone people. I would not get any work at all. Clients, magazine editors, publishers, etc.. aren't going  to come knocking at your door to ask  if you want to work for them. YOU have to let people know about you.

6. Be creative.

Be creative in the way you present yourself. Whether it is with your business card, CV, portafolio or email. How many CVs you think fashion magazines, agencies, galleries receive daily? And most CVs look pretty boring so make yours stand out with different format, shape, paper, medium, colour...

I believe this daily extra effort is what makes the difference between dreaming and making it happen.

As always I want to hear if you have other tips to share here or any other thoughts. What would be your dream job?

  1. Love this post Victoria! I too am a little uneasy with the self promotion, however I feel I've got a lot better at it this year! Also couldn't agree with you more on point daily networking! We should totally collaborate on an editorial the next time I'm down south!

  2. This is such an inspiring post! I'm currently trying to pluck up the courage to make quite a drastic change to my work life, by going self employed. I'm just trying to get everything in place, but the money side of things is really scaring me! I'm the same as you too, I find self-promotion really awkward, so that's definitely something I need to get better at!

  3. Great advice here Victoria. You have reminded me that I really should be doing more social networking than I do. I just can't get into it although I know it is a good thing to do to make dreams come true.

  6. Good post! I always battle with time and having too many ideas and not knowing how to focus and pick the best ideas. I have just turned freelance and find the self promotion hard!

  7. I have so many dreams I have to force myself to focus on one thing at a time, the BIG DREAM, actress, the middle dream illustrator, and the minor dream get more notice on my blog (i werks real hard on it!) but sometimes i get so dreamy I lose focus! Its important for me to write stuff down and dedicate days or even months to one dream otherwise things get muddled!

I'm loving these new posts! Its like daily bread :D

  10. I can't define my dream job but I have an idea, it's definitely down the illustration route but I have been more interested in graphic design lately, it's hard to get into those careers but there is no harm in trying! I definitely agree, keep being creative and enjoy what you do

  12. Great post! I daydream way too often about what I'd like to be doing and must really work out what I want to do and how to go about it. As you say, it's no good just thinking about it, it won't just happen. Thanks for the great advice :)

  13. Victoria, this is a great reminder. I have such a hard time self promoting because I don't want to sound like a self loving biacth and even when I started the blog it was so hard for me to be looking at myself parading around the blogsphere but if we don't put ourselves out there is like you said no one will know about what we do and how passionate we are about it. I definitely need to work harder and better at social networking.
