-The Aztecs had an elaborate, coherent symbolic system for making sense of their lives. When this was destroyed by the Spaniards, something new was needed to fill the void and make sense of New Spain (Mexico) the image of Guadalupe served that purpose.
-For the tourist in Mexico, la Virgen de Guadalupe perhaps is just a tacky image from Mexican culture, but La Virgen de Guadalupe is recognized as a symbol of all Catholic Mexicans but more than that is part of our culture,if you come to Mexico you will see this image everywhere! The virgin is not just about the church, she is Mexico, fiesta and fervor, food and devoted song, dance a symbol of the homeland.
